About uMhlanga

uMhlanga is located in KwaZulu-Natal province, just north of Durban along South Africa's east coast.

The area faces the warm Indian Ocean. This creates a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters.

The name "uMhlanga" comes from the Zulu language and means "place of the reeds." This name refers to the reeds that grow along the banks of the Ohlange River, which flows just north of the town.

The area was once part of an ancient coastal dune forest system. Small wildlife still lives in the remaining forest areas today.

uMhlanga Rocks transformed from a quiet fishing village into a busy resort town over several decades. The iconic lighthouse became a symbol of the area's coastal heritage. The town developed modern hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants while keeping its natural beaches and coastal beauty.
